Details: 10/06/1942 aged 25 remembered on Malta Memorial SON OF WILLIAM & THEODOSIA STEAD WEDNESDAY, 10 JUNE (1942) DURING WEDNESDAY MALTA WAS TO SEE A SUDDEN INCREASE IN ITS OFFENSIVE POTENTIAL, PENDING AN ATTEMPT TO RUN MAJOR CONVOYS THROUGH TO THE ISLAND. FIFTEEN BEAUFIGHTERS OF 235 SQUADRON HAD BEEN DETACHED FROM COASTAL COMMAND IN THE UNITED KINGDOM AND HAD FLOWN TO GIBRALTAR. LED BY THE COMMANDING OFFICER, WG CDR H J GARLICK, A DOZEN OF THESE SET OUT FOR THE LONG FLIGHT TO MALTA, ALL BUT ONE ARRIVING SAFELY; X8076 HAD BEEN LOST EN ROUTE, DITCHING 20 MILES EAST OF CAPE BON. IT IS UNCERTAIN IF THIS AIRCRAFT HAD BEEN INTERCEPTED BY BF109S FROM SICILY OR PANTELLARIA, BUT PLT OFF G R STEAD AND SGT J COCKSHOTT WERE BOTH LOST, THE LATTER'S BODY BEING RECOVERED FROM THE SEA.
