Raised on a small island in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland, of a long time seafaring family having strong connections with the Merchant Navy. The Western Isles were a bedrock of seamen and soldiers in the two world wars and the loss of life, per head capita, was one of the highest in the country. Left island home to attend further education on mainland, then served a marine engineering apprenticeship, before going off to sea with the British Tanker Company of London from 1964 – 1967 when forced to leave the service due to a medical concern. Spent the rest of my life with a leading Company in the field of Desalination which took me to many different countries over a 43 year career. Officially ‘retired’ in 2007, but asked to stay on and still working, albeit only three days per week. In my hobby of maritime research, I have used the excellent CWGC website for many years and often visit war graves and memorials in pursuit of information and details associated with this hobby. Thus the volunteering my service towards the War Graves Photographic Project, is by way of putting something back into a service that has provided me with much important information over the years of historical and maritime research.
